I know this took me forever leave me alone I was at PAX
Also Warner Bros didn't like me uploading this the first time so I had to color grade it. Deal with it I'm trying my best.

  • "Don't watch it alone, you'll be miserable" Me who has watched it twice by myself and still consider it my favorite movie: Am I a loser like Halliday now? But I rewatched it and before, I rated it 9/10 But now it's more like 8/10 1. The club scene with Art3mis, there was no reason for that scene other than Haha funny situation, and to segue into the shootout. It's the equivalent of the anime when your parents walk in. 2. One of The clues, or at least how Parzival found them was pretty dumb, the race clue. The curator stayed longer at the clue, did he do that for everyone and no one connected the dots? I guess you could say the answer was pretty cliche too. But I LOVE this movie for multiple reasons 1. I wouldn't have my love for 80s pop culture or my love for back to the future without this movie 2. While the amount of pop culture references is ridiculous, some are there for the sake of them just being there. It probably saved a lot more time to edit in than if they made original characters. And the plot doesn't need them. We can assume Halliday just put them in because he's a pop culture nerd. 3. The music is great, or at least the trailer music, but some of the music in the movie can be perfect. Blue monday and staying alive for the techno club, one way or another for parzival getting noticed in public after finding the copper key (making him famous), and of course, we're not gonna take it, for the final battle 4. The virtual world looks amazing. I think people understand what I'm getting at there 5. The ending is ambiguous, I never thought about how Halliday could be alive until my dad watched the movie with me on one of my many viewings and pointed it out. Making this movie more sentimental than it already was 6. I can watch multiple movies from the 80s, go back to watch this movie, and find so many more references I've never even noticed before. 7. There technically is a moral, but it's a small one that you can think about from time to time. (The virtual world is great, but Reality is more important) correct me if I'm wrong but I believe this is the real focus of the movie. How Wade learns to let go of the virtual world But even so. Cosmonaut brought up some good points as well (I never noticed how Halliday could possibly be autistic) 👍

  • I get that they gave them custom avatars to make it have less uncanny valley, but in the book, Art3mis and Parzival’s avatars look like themselves.

  • As someone who read the book, I thought the movie was very uninspired. Every cool obscure video game, tv show, and movie is replaced with mainstream entertainment. The three riddles are also HEAVILY dumbed down, making Wade seem kinda dumb.

  • From source this would have done better as a Netflix series. Cramming everything in to movie time forced all the nuance out the door. Gone character development, gone actual sacrifice, gone clever plot weaving. All for pretty CG a flood of unsubtle game references. Also, I think you're maybe a decade to young to appreciate the book. Idk, making assumptions here. If you rushed home from school to watch TNG then you're part of the target demographic.

  • I feel like the way they're trying to present Halliday is tragic is less the sense of "look at how he has to rely on pop culture due to being an outcast" but more instead in the lens of "he is an outcast because of his pop culture obsession, and thus its good that the main character is awarded for his fanboy-ness", thus why the main character is "the same" as Halliday, only difference being that being a nerd is cool now, further delving into that whole perspective of unquestioningly devoting into pop culture, and if you distance yourself than it's the world's fault for that

  • I do HIGHLY recommend you read the book. Yeah, there are a lot of semi cringe 80’s references, but the book kinda tells you that that’s the point: to make a scavenger hunt/Goonies book, but VR. Wade’s obsession with 80’s culture is actually handled really well, with him withdrawing for months and doing some DUMB STUFF. But after almost committing suicide, he kinda gets his act together, infiltrates IOI, and wins, and realizes that there is more to life than just the OASIS and pop culture. TL;DR, the book is fun, exciting, and makes all the characters better. Because adaptations aren’t perfect

  • I think the short epilogue fixed some of your criticisms about the movie. At the end of the movie (spoilers) Wade does the opposite stuff Haliday did when he took control of the Oasis. He shared the power with his clan, rather than keep it all himself and push away his friends like haliday. He also made a rule for the oasis to be closed on some days, so people can take a break from the Oasis.

  • I think the book appeals more to people like me, that grew up in the 80’s and 90’s. The film’s nostalgia references are more early-2000’s to 2010’s

    genius2012genius20124 tháng trước
  • Scott Pilgrim is not as good as people like to pretend. It's an insane fantasy of bullshit where nerds wish their life was with pretty girls (who somehow have like 8 old boyfriends) where losers are actually interesting and popular. It's such a joke of a portrayal of nerds with such insane PC elements that would never be true for 99% of geeks/nerds, and I'm not talking about the fantasy videogame elements... I'm talking about the real world social connections, character traits and opportunities.

  • I'm a total StarCraft fancunt and I didn't catch the "I'm waiting on you" thing. If the writer said it's intentional I guess it was, but it was badly done and has no relevance to either situation. Kerrigan says it as a standard unit response, the Scott Pilgrim chick says it in no particular context at all. And the "totally" ruins the resemblance anyway.
