The Last Jedi - The Most POLARIZING Star Wars Movie

You may be noticing the color grading and grain on some of the footage. That's so Disney doesn't try to demonetize me. Apologies :^)
I would have liked to really analyze the movie but I prefer for the movie to be out so I can really dig in. If the demand is there next year, I'll go through it again.

  • You can like the hyperdrive scene. To admit I thought it was a super cool moment. That shot was so cool looking. That being said don’t try to act like it makes sense because it doesn’t.

    Tyler _Tyler _Ngày trước
  • The hyperdrive scene is stupid. And to say “oh Star Wars has space wizards so it doesn’t need to make sense” is ridiculous. With that logic nothing in the Star Wars universe needs to make any sense. Why don’t guns just pop up in the good guys hands because there’s time travel. If the movie is trying to tell a good story and is taking itself somewhat seriously there SHOULD BE RULES.

  • There is a difference between losing and being a loser. Yes, you can show Luke losing. But what Ryan Johnson did to Luke is making him a loser. Luke is nothing like that. Yes, show us how he is losing, but as a winner in character... I will never forgive Ryan making Luke a loser.

  • I get your point but you don’t really understand why people are mad about the hyperdrive scene. For many people Star Wars isn’t just dump and funny but a big part of their life. They kind of live in Star Wars and distract themselves from their hard everyday life. It is normal that these people are mad when someone completely breaks the in-universe-rules. I was already mad when they told me that the first order reigns. I mean how could this happen in like a few days? Where is The New Republic? It doesn’t make any sense🤷🏼‍♂️

  • Rian Johnson did point out the fact that Empire once received mixed reviews and that other Star Wars directors weren't afraid to have twists in their movies. The VIworld channel, Star Wars Theory, made a video in response to that basically saying, "Duh...he can't compare himself to George Lucas! He's arrogant AF!". I mean, really? If he doesn't deserve to have originality in his movie just 'cause he isn't another director, the world's beyond my understanding. It would also be an understatement to say that George Lucas isn't really the gold standard to movie directors.

  • So I know this is an old video, and you probably won't see this, but you talked about our star wars rankings, which is funny because in my friend group of 3, all huge star wars fans, we did this. Oddly, we all had rogue one, revenge of the sith, and empire strikes back in our top five, but everything else was widely different. We all hate one sequel movie, but its different per person: my best friend hates the force awakens because Han dies (im not sure its a valid reason, but she also hates solo, but its her opinion and she's always considerate about them), my boyfriend HATES the last jedi with every bone in his body because it isn't STAR WARS enough, and I hate rise of Skywalker because it felt messy in story, plot, and pacing, and it directly felt like Disney was ripping off other star wars movies (also the Palpatine shit was terrible in my opinion). In our group, we rank the originals higher up because they're classics, we unironically love making fun of the prequels, because they are bad but they are a fun bad. So talking about star wars is always fun in my friend group, and we aren't allowed to talk about the last jedi because my boy always flips out and I always try to defend it. My friend just sits there, usually agreeing with me. But my ranking is : A new hope Rogue one RotS THJ Empire The force awakens AotC Return of the jedi PM Solo Rise of Skywalker. Oh, and we all love the Mandolorian

  • Never had a problem with Luke having distaste for the Jedi way, but I have always been irked by the “fleeting moment” where a guy who tried hard as he could to save his space Hitler dad deems that this kids gotta die before his lids crack. Like could we all agree this movie would make more sense if we cut the casino planet and instead what we got was a training scene where Kylo physically demonstrated a lack of control and desire for more power to confirm Luke’s arbitrary length of time sensing growing evil in him??

    Eric WoolardEric Woolard28 ngày trước
  • I am pretty dissapointed with Marcus's opinion for lightspeed ramming, mainly because he didnt understand why it is a terrible idea to be implemented, If Light speed ramming is that destructive and can do this much damage to a fleet maybe even blow a planet, why wasn't it ever used before? why wasn't it ever used by any faction to win a war and save so much resource. While it is a really cool scene, the fact it was just added for the sake that it is badass scene without carefully considering the impact it can have in the Star Wars universe just shows Disney didnt have any care for the franchise in any regard, which just makes it disrespectful to buy a carefully planned franchise with fantastic world building and speaking of adding scenes without planning the affects, what about Snoke's death? yes the same happened to Palpatine but it happened during the end of the trilogy, the first film introduced much of the story and the second filmed continued with world building while giving Luke and Darth Vader as well as the other cast a bigger story and expanding upon them, this all climaxes in the final movie where we are introduced to the ultimate baddy that being Palpatine, a move before we were shown his face and what he looks like and an episode before that his name was mentioned by Tarkin . wW cant kill Vader in a disrespectful way because it has been revealed in the previous movie he is Anakin Skywalker and that there is still good in him so we need this villain for the end part, this would have worked with an episode 9 idea because if you kill Snoke in episode 8 when the characters arc have been fully completed, who is gonna be the driving force for the Kylo Ren, we still need the devil on the shoulder for the story to move on because we cant think of Emo Ren as a menacing villain, nor Armitage Hux because Johnson so kindly decided to make him a stupid clown. No wonder JJ needed to bring back Palpatine and try to make a new story and cram it in one move and sure enough it was garbage for its own reasons. Atleast give Snoke a good Backstory like Sidious. Otherwise i do agree with the Luke's death, while i find it cowardly that he used a force projection, i still do like the ending where before he dies, Luke's journey ends as it began with twin suns.

Han and Obiwan crack some jokes and funny one liners here and there but the those movies and a completely different tone to these 3. One of my biggest problems with the trilogy. I swear Clone Wars as less jokes in its entire 7 season run than this trilogy.

  • I read the Legends but, him tryna kill Ben has nothing to do with his movie character either. Return of the Jedi had him trying to turn the most evil man in the galaxy back to good in spite of this same dude chopping off his arm and killing a lot of his friends. Also, Ben was Leia and Han's son. You're telling me Luke is gonna murder Leia and Han's son? Before he's even done anything bad? He wouldn't just try to teach him out of the darkness the way Yoda did for him?

    Michael LochlannMichael LochlannTháng trước
    • If Ben didn’t wake up in that exact moment Luke would’ve done exactly that, it’s detailed in the movie that it was a passing thought that if he killed him he would be able to prevent his Friends from dying, yet before he did it he came to his senses and decided not too ,however it was too late... Ben saw him standing over him and miss read the situation. Its showing how the slightest crack of paranoia and insecurity can lead to great travesty no matter how righteous and heroic they may be.We see this behaviour in rotj where he’s about to kill Vader but he comes to his senses and decides not to, however with Ben he didn’t make that call fast enough and it leaded to him creating his own demons. One brief mistake that changed everything.Like anakin he became to attached to those he loved and he suffered because of it.

  • The reason people nitpick these films egregiously is because the massive plot holes should be clear as daylight to people, yet we still get some mentally stunted individuals such as yourself that either gloss over them, or say "Stop making up shit to be mad about!" like the hyperdrive FUCKUP in all caps. That's not something we made up, it has been made up by the screenwriters, everything in Star Wars is made up to an extent but most of it keeps to realism. In real life, Hyperdrive does NOT WORK THAT WAY, it was such a massive blunder they had to fuck up the sequel to try and explain it and in so doing they made the movie even worse by filling it with more plotholes. This movie is utter garbage for people who: Enjoy good screenwriting. It's a trainwreck, the scripts are awful, the plot seems undeveloped until things happen which makes it prone to tons of plotholes as is evident. The parts that are actually fleshed out can still be faulted on logical terms like "Why the hell did you do that when you could've done this and avoided 3 scenes in the movie by not being stupid?" Enjoy good acting. I'm not even going to go into this, it rains every time Rey closes her goddamn mouth and that's 1 of the more forgivable flaws, she is the protagonist for god's sake, and she's an awful one at that. I feel like even with all the blunders and "Rey is awesome at everything" memes, we could've had a better actor in the main role and it would've made the current situation infinitely better, but instead we're stuck with this fly swallowing insectoid. Enjoy good scenes. The CGI is... bad. It was always bad since the second film because it did nothing different from the first film, the effects are regurgitated and never improved upon. The lights are awesome! Is what I would say if I was a moron (See what I did there sir?) who simply watches movies because lights are shiny and the sound effects are "SHYOOO" and it sounds cool. It's equal parts nostalgic and lazy, and neither of those things are good when an audience with a collective IQ exceeding that of a brick want a new experience in the form of literally anything coherent, but we keep getting plothole inducing events that make little to no sense and, on a list of possible things to do, these events are on the very bottom. Also the reason you're a salty little boy about the hyperdrive thing is because you can't refute a simple point: If you could really shake a planet larger than Sentinel to its core by using hyperdrive, why is it underused by the empire? And if you're going to say suicide bombing bad, why not make ships that can hyperdrive and are also autonomous in function and require no crew? Why does anything in this universe matter in terms of posing threats when you can take the galaxy's shittiest ship and hyperdrive through it? Where does this whole hyperdrive thing begin and end? Because if you answer that, you're lying to me and yourself, because not even the fucking screenwriters know the answer to that question.

  • 1. I have no problem with Rey being a nobody and do actually prefer that cause I am also tired of everyone being a sky walker but the problem is that the force awakens very clearly set up the idea that Rey is Special somehow and not to mention every single question that the force awakens left us with in this movie the answer to all of them is there is no answer and I don’t consider the twist being there is no twist “subverting expectations” 2. The hyperdrive scene sucks because you are telling me this is the first time anyone in the Star Wars universe us thought to use Light-speed as a weapon? Years of the clone wars and the empire and now the first order and no one was like “ya know what what if we just had a bunch of small self piloted ships that went into light speed and fucked up our enemies?” And also every space battle after I’m just gonna be asking myself why don’t they just use light speed? You think the first order cares about their storm troopers committing suicide? Especially if they can take out a capital ship in two seconds?

Rise of skywalker did well , until the death star thing , and the emperor . disneys ideas weren't original enough , emporer was literally the villian the whole time , kylo ren should have been the big bad , and he shouldve died , atleast i think . i was okay with his story , it couldve been better . Overall i think the sequels are just to similar to the ot sequals for their own good , because the OT did the things the sequels do much much better

I never mentioned the other star destroyers and the idea that they’d all bee in exact position like they are in any other circumstance is unlikely at best. My point was that if one hyper space jump wasn’t enough to kill Snokes ship I doubt it would do much against a space base as big as a moon.If they hyper space jumped through a planet then your point would be valid

  • Personally, I view myself having a constant smoldering passion for disliking this movie as both a rational critic and a Star Wars nerd. On Luke’s arc: I like what they did with Luke, it was a good way to give the character a new direction in a trilogy with a lot of copy and pasted arcs and characters. However, I take great issue with how they got him to be a cynical hermit. I never read any of the Legends books or anything after RotJ, but think about who Luke was in RotJ. He saw the good in everyone, including his absentee, Sith Lord father who tortured his best friend and cut off his hand. The idea that this man, after taking on his own nephew as a student, would stand over that child’s bed and turn on his lightsaber because of a single vision he had is a complete twisting of the character given to us-not in the books but in the movies themselves. Once again, I cannot stress this enough, I like Luke’s character in the movie, but I despise the way they mangled him in order to get there.

    • Okay, I will interject one more time to give you all an important message: EMPIRE STRIKES BACK WAS NEVER THIS CONTROVERSIAL AMONG FANS AND WAS GENERALLY WELL CONCEIVED UPON RELEASE. So many people keep throwing around this stupid idea that ESB was super divisive or something when it came out as a way to defend this movie but for fucks sake it’s not actually true. Holy crap, you found some archived articles saying that ESB isn’t great, guess that means everyone must’ve despised it back in the day. No, no it doesn’t. And honestly, are you really comparing these two movies and feeling hopeful that people will like The Last Jedi in the same way as ESB? No, because ESB is an objectively well written and shot film with consistent characters and a cohesive plot that sets up the next film and builds on the one that preceded it, all of which are completely lacking from The Last Jedi.

The Deathly SmileThe Deathly Smile2 tháng trước
    • My closing thoughts on your closing thoughts: A New Hope was wonderful and revolutionary. The Empire Strikes Back is a near perfect sequel and an objectively good film. Return of the Jedi is a step down from either of those but is a satisfying conclusion to a well made trilogy. The prequels are a shit show, but they have great memes and Revenge of the Sith is my second favorite Star Wars movie regardless because I can never have a bad time watching it due to its entertainment value. The Last Jedi is not fun to watch nor is it an objectively well shot or written movie. The theme of failure is achieved by making every character less smart or flat out idiotic, meaning that it is ultimately unsatisfying for all the reasons that Ryan Johnson didn’t intend. The subversion of expectations is handled disgustingly, with all the care and planning of “orange you glad I didn’t say banana?” I mean think about it. Really think about it while watching this movie. It subverts your expectations by creating a story that isn’t cohesive, dumbs down the characters, introduces those RIDICULOUSLY IMPRACTICAL BOMBERS, and ultimately burns every set up in the first movie to the ground, leaving a glasses over void of badly tied up ends and numerous plot holes.

    • On the hyperspace ram: This was one of the only really visually stunning shots in this movie. I think that a light speed ramming of a ship could most definitely destroy an entire fleet. The reason that a lot of people I’ve talked to are angry or annoyed by it is because it brings up a good question. If it’s so damn easy to destroy massive objects with hyperspace ramming why has no one else bothered doing it? Why did the rebels bother taking a one-in-a-million shot at either Deathstar, losing countless lives in the process when they could take one ship with one life and turn both stations to orbiting debris in moments? Why didn’t any ultra-radical rebels decide to hop in their Star cruiser and just glass the entirety of Corusant while the Emperor is there and just be fucking done with the entire Empire? Every instance talking about the capability of starships to ram things through hyperspace to cause massive damage opens up massive plot holes everywhere else in the saga’s narrative.

    • On Snoke: I don’t really mind that we don’t know why he’s so powerful, that doesn’t really matter. I think that the problem is that you set up this character in the first movie of the trilogy and then there’s this idea that he’ll be fleshed out. And then the next movie the heroes have their first encounter with the *big* big baddie of the trilogy and without any more fleshing out or any difficulty he’s just frickin dead and the trilogy has no real villain to proceed with because they just spent the whole damn movie bringing Kylo closer to the light side.

The Deathly SmileThe Deathly Smile2 tháng trước
    • On Rey: I also like that she’s a nobody...that is, if the people writing this trilogy ever had a FRICKING PLAN TO MAKE A COHESIVE ARC ACROSS ALL THREE FILMS INSTEAD OF JUST BASING EVERY MOVIE OFF OF THE AUDIENCE REACTION TO THE LAST ONE. I like Rey being a nobody, I really do, but that is completely ruined for me by the fact that JJ Abrams had no plan but kept hinting that there was some cool backstory and that Ryan Johnson didn’t find a way to make literally anything pay off.

  • I would've liked to see more of Phasma and Snoke. Rose didn't need to exist, Poe would've been better and the tall purple haired lady hiding secrets was dumb. Leia using the force to just... not die was just kinda stupid. Finn is wasted.

    • Leia used the Force to pull herself back to the ship. She actually should’ve died from the explosion, not mere exposure to space.

  • I dont care for star wars, I've never watched the movies, but i like to watch reviews and rants and know peoples opinions on it. You can't say people are dumb and stupid for being upset cause Luke was acting out of character (which Mark himself didn't like) for not acting like he did before or he did in the novels, but then you hate it when superman or batman act out of character because that's not how they act in the comics

  • I like Marcus a lot and love his vids but I disagree with a lot that he has to say The dumb side plot thing where he says every Star Wars movie does it is a dumb argument because most of those other movies don’t drag out the pointless shit. The garbage scene is like 2-3 mins long same with escaping the space worm in Empire. 2. I’m fine with Reys parents being nobodies (and I know their not I’ve seen the last movie) because in my mind the force was something that anyone could tap into if they had the right stuff. Anyone could be a Jedi and you don’t need Skywalker blood is more interesting to me but when you establish the mystery of her parents being someone but then to just subvert the audiences expectations just cuz then I get annoyed. 3. I don’t need a lightsaber fight in all my Star Wars movies I’m fine if there are no Sith or Jedi and it’s something else entirely different, but if there are Sith and Jedi then you kinda need one, cuz it’s a good way to show off the characters progression as combatants. 4. I don’t know the Luke stuff did bother me a bit I won’t lie but I did enjoy the ending he got so I’m fine with it I understand you need to have these characters have problems because if there always perfect all the time that doesn’t make them interesting.
