  • you made it look impossible to adapt videogames and thats incorrect. you can base it on the gorgeous stories and characters and aesthetics created by the videogame industry. the problem has always been old ass hollywood producers not understanding crap about a game, and this movies will only be good when an actual fan gets to write them

  • Dragon Quest: Your Story on netflix was pretty good. The animation was fantastic and the music was as well, but the story could use some work. Like you said, it would have benefited from being a show instead of an 1.5 hour movie. Worth a watch though

  • I think this misses the mark on what makes a good adaptation. An adaptation is specifically called an adaptation because the subject has to be changed to fit the media. A game does not work as a movie: correct. But a movie adaptation of a game should not be trying to make a game, it should be trying to make a movie with the cinematic elements of the game used to make that movie. Think about some of the most successful adaptations of all time: they are not beat for beat copies of their source material. The Shining the movie is very far from The Shining the book, but uses the essence of the book plot to remain familiar while not being constrained by it. Same goes for American Psycho, FIght Club, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, etc. A good video game movie would do exactly the same. I think the best potential for a good video game adaptation would come from a franchise, picking the best parts from multiple games. Many of the more cinematic franchises have character development spread across multiple games rather than within one game. Take Uncharted for example. Within one game, Nathan is just a generic Indiana Jones-esque action hero with a father-figure mentor in Sully. But over the course of the games he falls in love with Elena, drifts apart from her, reconnects, and we explore his life with Sully and why their life and relationship is the way it is, and all of these would make for a perfectly good movie script. You don't even have to adapt a specific game's plot (El Dorado, Shangri la, etc) as long as you have a recognizable Nathan Drake, Sully and Elena exploring some ruins while bad guys try and steal the treasure. You could also just make the plot game-adjacent. Something like how Tales from the Borderlands is not about the main characters of Borderlands. An adaptation for, say, Halo could just explore other Spartans besides Master Chief, or follow an ODST unit. It would borrow the franchise's world building but use original characters to make a proper cinematic narrative.

  • I think the Destiny franchise could be made into a good movie/movies if it was about times that the player was not there. Primarily show big events from before the first game (Battle of twilight gap and such)

    JesseJesseTháng trước
  • It's actually very, very easy to make a Bioshock adaptation: just make it a prequel to the first game, showing Ryan's ascencion to a great entrepreneur, how he built Rapture, and then how its society came to be what we see in the first game. End the series the moment Jack enters the city. Gg ez.

  • 'it's impossible to make a good movie out of video game'...I've said this for 20+ years. The raw material of making a good movie...the narrative...is often just the flavor of a game. You can't make a cake with just the chocolate.

  • Most single player videogames are designed gameplay first. You design the gameplay loop, you think about the levels and the progression and then work a plot around it. The best games make the two integrate seamlessly, but there's a huge uphill battle in making one work without the other

  • 5:00 Tom Holland: I can work with this

    MrRandomhereMrRandomhereTháng trước
  • I would say that the whole "they copy the plot" isn't a 100% true. Looking at Resident Evil, Tomb Raider, Super Mario bros, Assassin creed, these movies don't even use the same story as the games. The films take popular bits from the story and "do their own thing" and still somehow make a plot thats more stupid than what the games had.

  • Yes bio shock a randomly picked game that is praised because of its interactivity. Even then instead of taking the games plot and putting it into a movie maybe take a plot from on of the characters we've never seen before everything went to shit. I think there can be a good video game movie and movies like detective pikachu or sonic just proves that

    Fallen TitanFallen TitanTháng trước
  • I liked lora croft

    Fallen TitanFallen TitanTháng trước
  • I think the problem is to make a good video game movie you can only use specific games with interesting plots and even then only like 30% of the plot or lore is usable the rest would have to be altered or entirely recreated. Like the assassin's creed movie, you could make a good movie about it but only the time period, the idea of two secret factions fighting for control of the world with different ideologies, and the character of Ezio are usable everything else is either outright bad or flimsy. So to do a video game movie you need to stay true to the themes and ideas of the game while changing like 70 to 80% of the material to fit a movie's length and format with proper character arcs and plot. At which point it is just easier to make a completely original movie. So while it is possible to make a good one it would be extremely difficult and much easier to just make a normal good movie so it would only ever happen if an amazing creator was doing it as a passion project which isn't really possible with movies considering their budgets.

  • I actually like the Silent Hill movie. Sure, it's way too long and has a lot about it thats flawed (terrible child acting specifically) but I thought visually it was a great adaptation of the game. It felt like Silent Hill rather than just some dumb horror movie and they could've easily phoned it in and made a jumpscare fest like they did with the sequel, but they didn't. The director was also a fan of the games, he spent 5 years trying to get the rights. I'd rather have that movie than a Silent Hill directed by Uwe Boll.

  • I think that a video game movie could definitely work, but the reason none of them have so far is because of -writers who don’t know the source material -the companies that are shilling them just wanting to make easy, quick money -unskilled writers -an industry wide failure to replace the fun of gameplay with something equally valuable and unique to the medium of film

  • How I honestly feel is that video game films should COMPLIMENT the series they're based on. Instead of re-telling the events and stories we've seen before, introduce us to a story or a quest that would warrant a film. It could be a really great opportunity to build lore to existing properties and could possibly generate more excitement for newcomers into the franchise. I always felt that if a story for a video game movie could be told better in a game, then what's the point in making a movie???

    AislingAisling3 tháng trước
  • I'd argue against this. Originally I agreed with his points, but looking back on it I think it has alot to do with the directing, and more so which game is specifically being made into a movie. Games praised for their compelling stories could surely have a movie made after them, but In almost all circumstances I would say it shouldn't take place at the same time as the game, meaning it be before or after the events of the game or games. For example, I could imagine a really good western, about the Van Der Linde gang in the west, as they are being driven to the East by the law, and slowly being conformed and defeated by Industrialism.

      J.J J.J.J J.3 tháng trước
  • I think the argument that no one can EVER make a good game adaptation is as specious an argument as the one that games cannot be art, and it pivots on the same aspect of "interactivity". I think you could make a good Bioshock movie, you could call it Rapture, you could make the main character nameless for most of the movie. The real problem with video games adaptation is slavish adherence to the source material, instead of adapting it to the media you want to produce. What we really need is a producer that understands you can take soul of the source material and then make a movie with that concept without trying to please the hardcore fans. That's really the biggest obstacle to good video game adaptations.
